According to Japan’s Kyodo News agency, the temblor, which hit just after 5 a.m. local time, was centered at a depth of 8 km, and was felt as far away as Tokyo and Osaka. The earthquake struck the same area as the March 11, 2011, quake and tsunami, which left over 18,000 people dead or missing and caused a triple meltdown at the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant.
