Strong earthquake near the Fukushima region of Japan, 16 March 2022 – more than 2 million households are without power

A 7.4 magnitude earthquake that struck the Fukushima region of Japan on March 16 killed at least four people and injured more than 100, bringing back memories of a deadly quake and tsunami 11 years ago that caused a nuclear plant disaster. According to Japan’s Kyodo News agency, the temblor, which hit just after 5 a.m. local time, was centered at a depth of 8 km, and was felt as far away as Tokyo and Osaka. The earthquake struck the same area as the March 11, 2011, quake and tsunami, which left over 18,000 people dead or missing and caused a triple meltdown at the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant.
